Ryan Mallet Leaves Michigan. Opens the Door For National#1 Recruit Terrelle Pryor

Gonna miss you Ryan. Good luck!

Rich Rodriguez’s tenor at Michigan is starting off with a bang. Strong armed and very talented, but immoble freshman QB Ryan Mallett has left the school and is most likely to land at Tennessee.

Meanwhile the nation’s top recruit Terrell Pryor, a six foot six athletically gifted phenom from Jeanette, PA has added Michigan to the mix after having a conversation with Rodriguez. He’s been compared to Vince Young and is also the nation’s number three ranked small forward in basketball.

If this happens? Oh my goodness….

AP

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Ryan Mallett has left the Michigan football program, and the quarterback might be reunited with his offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

“He’s on his way home,” Jim Mallett told The Associated Press on Wednesday. “We don’t know where he’s going to go yet, but we need to do something quick. We’re going to visit three, four or five schools.”

The former Texas Class 4A offensive player of the year may end up at Tennessee, which is considering hiring former Michigan offensive coordinator Mike DeBord and quarterbacks coach Scott Loeffler.

“If they’re hired, that would be a real good possibility,” Jim Mallett said. “Ryan really clicked with both coach DeBord and coach Loeffler during the last couple months of the season and during bowl practices, I’ve never seen Ryan throw the ball or read defenses as well as he did.”

Mallett said his son also will consider transferring to Texas A&M, Arkansas and UCLA among other schools. After sitting out next season, he will have three years of eligibility.

“Several schools have called and we’re still open-minded about any program that runs a pro-style offense,” he said. “He’s going to enroll this semester, so we’ve got to get moving.”

Mallett played in 11 games as a freshman, filling in for Chad Henne when he was injured. He was 61-of-141 for 892 yards with seven touchdown passes and five interceptions.

As soon as Lloyd Carr retired and Rich Rodriguez was hired, Mallett’s days seemed to be numbered because of Rodriguez’s spread offense that has featured mobile quarterbacks.

“It just wasn’t a fit and yet, it was a hard decision,” Jim Mallett said. “When he came home for Christmas, he told me and my wife that he really was falling in love with being at Michigan.

“Ryan wants to thank coach Carr, his staff and all the players for helping him have a great experience the past year.”

Now the good news:

6’6” 235 and can run? Oh Oh! T3, Okori, Michelle and DMac: We gonna be alright!

Free Press:

Terrelle Pryor, the No. 1 high school football recruit in America according to Rivals.com, has added Michigan to the list of schools he might choose to attend because of its new coach.

Pryor, a 6-6, 235-pound dual-threat quarterback with 4.4 speed out of Jeannette, Pa., broke the news about West Virginia’s Rich Rodriguez taking the Michigan head-coaching job.

“I just spoke to Coach Rodriguez … he told me he is going to Michigan,” Pryor told Superprep.com Sunday afternoon. “He said they made him an offer and he can’t refuse it.”

Later, Pryor told Rivals.com: “He called me this morning and told me before he announced to anyone. He said he’s keeping the same offense that he had at West Virginia because it’s all he knows. I love that offense. I told him I was very interested.”

Pryor, who listed Florida, Ohio State, Penn State, Oregon and West Virginia as his favorites to attend as of Sunday, told Superprep.com to “add Michigan to my list” following his conversation with Rodriguez.

“He’s excited and so was I,” Pryor told Rivals.com. “Michigan was on my early list, and now their right up there again. He’s a great coach and I like his offense.”

Pryor’s addition of Michigan to his possible list of school is interesting because the status of the U-M quarterbacking job could be up in the air.

Thought to be a fixture behind center the next three seasons at U-M, sophomore-to-be Ryan Mallet’s status as U-M’s starter next season is suddenly under question.

Rodriguez runs a spread-option offense, and the 6-foot-7, 252-pound Mallet isn’t known for his mobility. The spread option demands a mobile quarterback with a quick release — at least in Rodriguez’s version.

Pryor has dropped Tennessee and West Virginia from his list.

“My list is made up of some of the same teams,” Pryor said. “Ohio State is in there, Florida is in there and Penn State is in there, but now Oregon is in the mix and now Michigan – so a lot has changed. Tennessee and West Virginia are now out.

“I’ve only been to Ohio State on an official and I’ve been to Penn State a few times. I need to see other schools, especially Michigan now.”

Pryor rushed for 1,676 yards and 13 touchdowns and was 92 of 163 passing for 1.732 yards and 15 touchdowns during his junior season. He followed that up by leading the Jeannette Jayhawks to Class AA state championship this season.

Pryor would fall in line with the dual-threat quarterback Rodriguez has favored in his system in the past.

While offensive coordinator at Tulane (1997-98), Rodriguez was responsible for Shaun King’s record-breaking career. King finished the ’98 season with an NCAA-record passing effeciency of 183.3 and became the first player in NCAA history to pass for 300 yards and run for 100 yards in a game.

After following Tommy Bowden to Clemson, Rich Rodriguez’s stint as offensive coordinator (1999-2000) helped turn Woody Dantzler into the first quarterback in NCAA history to throw for at least 2000 yards and rush for at least 1000 yards in the same season.

And over the last three seasons at West Virginia, Rodriguez’s spread option helped turn Pat White into a Heisman Trophy contender this season.

Because of his size, something not found among Rodriquez’s past quarterbacks, most talent evaluators tend to compare Pryor to former Texas star Vince Young.

“I leave it up to people to make their own comparisons when they watch me play,” Pryor told Rivals.com in February. “It’s a very nice comparison, but I haven’t done anything yet. I like to watch Vince Young and Troy Smith and the quarterbacks that can move around and do things, but I don’t compare myself to them.”

Pryor’s athletic ability may be on display on more than just the football field in college. Though a celebrated high school football player, Pryor is also considered an elite-level talent on the basketball court. So much so that Rivals.com has Pryor ranked among the top 30 recruits in the nation and the No. 3 small forward in the class of 2008.

Over the summer, Pryor maintained that he would like to play both football and basketball in college.

“I’ll give it a try,” Pryor told Scout.com in May. “It’s going to come down to the system I fit into and where I feel comfortable at.”

Not a fan of the music, but the video is on point

  1. I’m so happy. I thought Mallet would be a good fit in the Michigan spread under R-Rod considering the numbers Shaun King put up, but I guess he didn’t want to play for us. Thats ok because we hit the lottery.

I saw this kid in the Army High School game, he is a beast Mizzo. He has great speed, very tall, great arm, and he can get out that pocket and turn it up field.

The best part about him, he said that if he had a shot at the starting QB spot then Michigan would be the school.

But wait, there is more, the funny thing is Ohio State was his choice before Rich came to Michigan. We snatched one away from those Buckeyes.

I sat with Terelle’s cousin and watched him play a damn good game this weekend in the Army All Star game. I hope he does well and wish him much success. I would like to see him at West Virginia and run amok with Noel Devine…but my prayers still go out to him.

  3. I’ve got a quick question…

wasn’t it like, oh I dunno, 2 months or so ago where there was an argument about how announcers refer to black/running quarterbacks as athletic, and how it’s somehow racist? because they also call white pocket passers smart or something…

Pryor is a beast, I hope he ends up in Ann Arbor.

  4. Pryor is coming to Michigan. I hear through reliable sources that Mallet leaving made it 100%.

  5. Boney you smell life with superficial vision.

  6. Really Boney, that’s how you remember the argument?

Get the fuck out of here.

Seriously, that’s a ridiculous oversimplification of the comments of people on this site masked in a fake ass attempt to pretend like you don’t remember what was said.

That’s just sad. And oh, nobody was talking about race, but Boney (Mr. Let’s just enjoy the games) decides that it needs to be inserted into the convo.

    Funny how that shit works.

  7. Wow…its like Calvin Johnson playing QB…….4.4 speed?? just WOW.

  8. I can’t imagine Pryor going to any school other than Michigan. Rod will make him a God in Ann Arbor. I admit, I was little skeptical about his skills. But what he did to the West All Stars last weekend is illegal in most southern states. Dude is the truth. Once Pryor signs, I bet you a hurricane wouldn’t be able to blow the smile off of Mizzo’s face. Well, maybe a Miami Hurricane:) We coming back! Believe me.

  9. Diallo what games was that you saw pryor in last week?

Was that the east west football allstar game?

  10. Cevidence Says:

Yeah he played in the Army Allstar Game last weekend

  11. Yeah it was the Army game, and he was the best player on the field. He just made a couple plays that had me going “Whoa, kid is nice.” If he keeps his head on straight, he’s can’t miss.

  12. Thanks guys. I missed the game. I have been meaning to see what this kid is like.

  13. I have one thing to say. Just one thing.

  15. The comments on this board are ridiculous. To begin with, he isnt the #1 recruit. SI doesnt even have him ranked in the top 10. I saw him in the Army HS game. Guess what—surprise–he cant pass. Just another “athlete” playing out of position. Michigan fans are so delusional. Rodriguez may just ruin the program, character questions are swirling around him. And his offense is nothing but gimmicks. UM has had a long list of quality QBs. Leach, Brady, Harbaugh, Griese, Henson, Grbac, Collins, Navarre, Henne. UM wasnt called Qurterback U for nothing. All that is over now. Look at the QBs Rodriguez has “developed”. Shaun King, Woody Dantzler and now Pat White. Great. I remember watching Clemson when he was Off Coordinator at Clemson. Man it was ugly, and Dantzler was pathetic. WVU had a very good program before Rodriguez. He didnt “build” the program. All he is, is the flavor of the month. This is going to end badly for UM down the road.

  16. Doug why don’t you just go follow Mallet to the vols.

I remember watching Charlie Whitehurst when he was in Clemson. Was Rodriguez there then…….because Whitehurst was pathetic. I guess Whitehurst was just another athlete who didn’t have the smarts or quick thinking ability to play QB. He was just too busy using his legs instead of his brain.
