Redskins’ Safety Sean Taylor Succumbs to Gunshot Wound

Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor has died from injuries he sustained when he was shot in the upper leg early Monday morning at his home in Miami. Taylor was 24 years old and the father of a 1 year-old daughter.

In what was an obvious burglary attempt, Taylor and his fiance’ were awakened by an intruder in the home around 1:45 a.m. Taylor grabbed a machete that he kept in the bedroom. Once the intruder entered the room two shots were fired – one striking Taylor in the groin area, severing the Femoral artery. Taylor’ fiance’ and daughter were not harmed

Despite losing a significant amount of blood, there were signs of hope last night at Taylor blinked when asked and also squeezed the hand of a nurse.

Taylor never regained consciousness.

* Addendum: Thanks Ron for posting this. I crashed and didn’t hear the news until my sister let me know.

-Mizzo

Taylor and his fiancee had been in the bedroom when a disturbance was heard in the living room, Sharpstein (Sean’s lawyer) said.

“(He) tried to get a small machete that he keeps under the bed to defend himself but the door was burst into,” Sharpstein told CNN, adding that Taylor’s fiancee hid under the covers until the assailants had fled.

Sharpstein said he had received a call from Taylor’s father, Florida City police chief Pete Taylor.

“He was overwrought with grief and called me to tell me that Sean was with God,” Sharpstein told CNN.

Taylor’s family told the Redskins of his passing Tuesday morning, the team’s brief website posting said.

“The family of Sean Taylor has notified the Redskins that Taylor passed away Tuesday morning at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. He was 24,” the posting said.

“Taylor was injured Monday in a shooting at his residence in Miami and did not survive.”

Taylor was the fifth pick of the 2004 NFL Draft and had a strong 2007 season with 42 tackles and a team-high five interceptions until a November 11 knee injury forced him to the sidelines the past two games.

Taylor made 306 tackles and 12 interceptions in parts of four seasons with the Redskins.

The shooting stunned Taylor’s Redskins’ teammates, who had been optimistic after reports Taylor had made facial expressions Monday night, his first signs of conscious behavoir following concerns of brain damage.

“For all of us here, we’re obviously in shock,” Redskins coach Joe Gibbs had said Monday. “I know I can’t put it in words.”

Redskins running back Clinton Portis, a college teammate of Taylor at the Universitry of Miami, lammented Monday that had Taylor not been injured, he would not have been with the team after their Sunday game in Tampa.

“How can you deal with it? It’s hard,” Portis said. “All we can think about is if he had been with us on the flight to Tampa, if he was at the game with us, then he would not have been in that situation.”

I don’t mind reporting the loss of a game; breaking news like this to our readers is not something that I want to get used to.

This was one story I wish Mike would’ve beaten me to.

TSF family, this is the true meaning a sad day in sports. Not the Barry Bonds indictment or Michael Vick going to jail. It’s going to be interesting to see how this gets reported.

We want all of you to make a list and check it twice.

It will be straight up criminal if ESPN doesn’t cover this ad nauseum. They’ve covered idiosyncrasies (in the grand scheme of things regarding culture) as if an athlete perished, so this is an opportunity to show and prove. We’re going to stay positive on this until it all plays out. Taylor was a hardcore hitter. He was poised to go down as one of the best at his position comparable to the likes of former Denver Bronco big hitter Steve Atwater. Big athletic safeties don’t come around too often, they usually transition to linebacker once they get to the pros because they can’t cover. Taylor was that good. Although he could cover, he was out there to tear someone’s head off.

Remember the hit he laid on punter Brian Moorman in the Pro Bowl? The one he actually was criticized for? He was giving the league and its fans something to remember him by.

Here’s a compilation of big hits, bomb licks and Sean Taylor super speed smacks:

We lost an exciting play maker, his family lost so much more.

We all pray his fiancee’ and daughter remember: We fall down, but we get up.

To An Athlete Dying Young
A.E. Housman

The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.

To-day, the road all runners come,
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
Townsman of a stiller town.

Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields were glory does not stay
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose.

Eyes the shady night has shut
Cannot see the record cut,
And silence sounds no worse than cheers
After earth has stopped the ears:

Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man.

The Starting Five Family extends its condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the Taylor Family.

  1. RIP Sean… so sad, so senseless

  2. TBR,

Now this is a sad day. Just 24 years old with so much to live for. My hearts and prayers go out to his family and the entire Redskin organization.

  3. Growing up in the rural South, there is a saying that I’ve heard all my life at times like this. I always kinda brushed it off as “old folks sayin’.. now its the only thing that makes sense to me……

He’s in a much better place right now.

  4. thebrotherreport Says:

It just keeps bringing me back to the point that none of us are truly safe.

Finances and a good living bring peace of mind because your able to take care of those that you love and have nice things for yourself. But it doesn’t always bring peace – as a people we should know that better than anyone.

  5. Life is short and sometimes ends in a way that none of us understand. Which is why we should all hug our love ones a little tighter.

  6. **I added some words and a link to the original post by TBR**

Yeah that’s the biggest thing Michelle, the cliche here is to say that we shouldn’t take anyone for granted, but it certainly applies here. Like TBR pointed out, none of us are safe.

TBR and I are obviously Eagles fans because we were live in the area, but I had mad respect for Taylor. I had to draw a comparison to Steve Atwater just to give fans a semblance of just how good Taylor was going to become.

The NFL lost a straight up soldier. He was a man’s man among NFL men.

  7. It’s a shame that someone had to take such a promising young person away from not only the sports community, but also the world.

    Sean will truly be missed.

    RIP

  8. GrandNubian Says:

Rest In Peace Sean……you were one helluva football player. Eventhough i didn’t know you personally, and regardless of what those “devils” in the MSM say about you, I know that you was a better person. I love you brother.

May your spirit find it’s way to your fathers.

    Hetep!

  9. When, you put things in prospective and try to feel what his faimly and friends are feeling. It is one of the sad moments in life when all of us should really think before hurting other people. This young man had a life and a child and it was taken by someone who broke the rules. I pray for his faimly and friends and I hope Jesus grabbed him up and tells “him your home now.

  10. Mizzo,

Loved the tribute video. Sean’s life should be celebrated. Even though I never knew him personally, his presence in this world will be missed.

  11. Redskins Fan Says:

I just want to say that my thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, and that he will be greatly missed on and off the football field. He was a great football player and regardless of the negative things the media tried to place on him, a good person. He was already one of the best safeties in the league at age 24 and had a great career ahead of him. This type of situation is unfathomable, and I just pray that the media finally shows him the respect he always deserved.

  12. Kenneth,

    BEAUTIFUL!

  13. Thanks Redskins Fan. This is a time for respect–period.

Grand Nubian: May your spirit find it’s way to your fathers.

    Hetep!

    That’s what I’m talking about.

  14. Mizzo,

Sean was a proud Miami Hurricane and a strong man. I’m sure he doesn’t mind. He was a bad boy.

  15. For the record, the “horse collar” tackle you referred to was Safety Roy Williams of the Dallas Cowboys, not the late great Sean Taylor. I realize this is insignificant given the circumstances but its also important to keep the facts correct as we are celebrating his life.

RIP Sean Taylor and my deepest condolances to his family friends and the rest of Redskins Nation.

  16. Changed. Sorry about that folks.

  17. thebrotherreport Says:

What hurts is that this was a life that we saw so much promise in, and some will say that it was a life unfulfilled, but who are we to say when someone has reached that fulfillment.

As a fan you forget the ages of some of the athletes or even your own when it comes to celebrating them (I know I’m guilty of that) it’s hard to believe that this young man was 24 years old with a world of talent and it was taken away like that. Everything that this man and his parents worked for is gone – and that’s what I’m struggling with right now.

There is a poem just posted in the latter part of the story.

  18. Folks please keep you cell phones near your bed side at night. It has been reported that Sean’s girlfriend grabbed the home phone to call 911 when they heard the noise downstairs, unfortunately the line had been cut. There have been home invasions all over the country. Your home alarm will not protect you if the phone line is cut since the alarm dials the monitoring center through the phone line. The monitoring center would receive a phone line fail signal but, at most alarm monitoring centers, that signal is not treated with duress protocol. Maybe alarm companies will change their policy and send the police when receiving a phone line fail signal–unless there is a bad storm in the area. (Alarm customers are fined by police departments if they have too many false alarm calls)

  19. TBR,

That is a beautiful poem. This is all so sad. We should all celebrate his life.
He’s given many fans lots of memories. His spirit lives on.

  20. I’m in total shock and disbelief. I’m a big Redskins fan and to hear the news of Sean Taylor’s passing is terrible. It’s a shame to see a brother’s life cut short by the hands of an unscrupulous thug. And the MSM are still classless by still putting his name on the mud while fighting for his life. All my prayers goes to his family especially to his 1-year old daughter Jackie. His game and his personality will be sorely miss not only to Redskins fans but to all football fan. RIP Sean. Hail to no. 21 !

  21. Thanks for that Michelle.

  22. The XFacta Says:

Yo this is mad sad. Peace and blessings to the Taylor family

  23. R.I.P. Sean Taylor and I am ready for the black apologists and white boys to blame rap music, black men and other pathologies like the white trolls darius, boney and david mac.

Nobody at all is suggesting that except racists like you, who are practically BEGGING white people to say that, just so that you can vent all your vile racism and fit such comments (currently non-existent) into your pre-conceived racist notions about other people. Seriously, you’re a sick and angry soul, and you’re fooling nobody except other racists like yourself who are too afraid to look within and see what ill spirits they’ve become.

  25. […] The Starting Five. Popularity: unranked […]

  26. Darius, actually Eric Daniels has a point. The blaming has already started with Michael Wilbon and the posters over at Espn.com leading the charge. I find it interesting that a man, who in an attempt to protect his life, family, and property is being blamed for his own demise. It’s amazinig how certain people have come to the conclusion that friends Sean Taylor may have had and trouble he was in years ago is the cause of Taylor being broken in on and shot. So yeah, Eric’s right about the white boys and their black puppets.

  27. As mizzo said in the other post, this really isn’t the time for it.
Young man died and left his fiance and child behind. It is sad, sucks, and senseless. That’s it.

  28. RIP Sean. Love and peace to his family and loved ones.

  29. Darius: for gods sake, can we refrain from the sniping and provocation for one goddamn day? A man has died at age 24. Just stfu.

Then why don’t you make the very same suggestion to the racist posts in this very same thread, already accusing the “white media” of doing racist things that they haven’t even done yet??? Why are you so selective in who you choose to rebuke about staying on point about Taylor’s death? You mean to say that you can be obnoxious, racist, and off point as you want to be, so long as it involves obnoxious and unfounded accusations about white people? That somehow gets a pass on this day in your book? Why?

  31. I shut down the other comment thread out of reverence for Sean Taylor. I’ll do the same if the discourse here deteriorates. Please people. Have some respect.

  32. Rest in Peace Sean.

People like Darius (Friedman really) are to be expected on occassions such as this…its what they do…..its their calling. We can’t forget that some callings come from the other place.

  33. You’re right Mizzo…of all days, this is one for restraint and reflection.

  34. screw you Darius and whiteboys like you on ESPN is already blaming ‘black culture’and hip- hop on Taylor’s death. You white people and black apologists crack me up. You come on a site and rant and rave about people like us being ‘oversenstive’ and ‘racist’ if we don’t go along with whitey’s rules of engagment, yes I am a bigot (happy now!!!)just like you because I pre-judge white americans like you on their actions in regards to their behavior . So like Dr. King the king of ‘black guilt ‘ I am judging white amerikkkans, the MSM, their politcal intellectuals and black apologists on the content of their “CHARACTER”.

I don’t have the power to discriminate against whites you DUMBASS so the charge of racist is ill founded like your posts.

Translation: Please people, if you’re going to be racist or obnoxious then please restrict the hostility and aim it at white people only. That’s perfectly acceptable. But, if you have the gall to challenge the racists, well then, I’ll just have to shut this thread down right quick. Any dissent on my gestapo-like censored blog, anything that strays from the official state party line which advocates sweeping caricatures of caucasians, is wholly unwelcome.

  36. Darius have a nice life.

Listen people, when folks like Darius come on the site, their aim is to upset the thread.

    Pay them no mind

  37. Folks I have heard on the radio that they may have some leads.

  38. It is truly a shame that some people can’t put agendas and beliefs aside for one day to respect the dead.

If a man dieing while getting up in the middle of the night to try and protect his family doesn’t move you on some level then you are truly beyond help.

    R.I.P. Sean

  39. Eric,

Thanks for the info. I hope the police find the people responsible. I need to see just want kind of sad individual does something like this. They could have killed an 18 month old child. What a coward.

  40. The NFL should put up a million dollar reward for info leading to the capture of Sean’s killer.

  41. thebrotherreport Says:

I don’t understand how people can bring up a man’s past when his family and friends are in mourning.

Sean Taylor was a victim; he was killed in his home doing what any real man would’ve done in that situation – defend his family.

He wasn’t drunk behind the wheel, he wasn’t out at a club in a gunfight and he wasn’t somewhere poppin’ pills or snortin’ coke, he was in what he thought was the safest place he could be…his home.

For those that want to speculate and put a man’s life under a microscope when his life is no more. You’re act is more cowardice than the act that took his life.

Many of you have done things far worse than what Sean did in his brief life , the only reason that it is not known is because of who you/we are…common people, we can do things and it can be kept on the DL or whatever. As a professional athlete Sean lived a life of privilege, but with that privilege a certain degree of privacy is sacrificed, the majority of your life is shared with millions – be it right, wrong or indifferent.

A wise man once told me that character is not what you do when people are watching – it’s what you do when no one is watching. If that is true then we all have character flaws and need to take a gut check before we set out to criticize others.

  42. This is for the folks out there who think TSF is exclusive in our media criticisms.

A journalist just sent me this video of the Redskins press conference.

  43. thebrotherreport Says:

Who in the hell is Leonard Shapiro, I’m not going to go there today but I’ve got something for his a$$ when I send him an email.

  44. I’m sorry but Mike Wilbon of ESPN is a jerk. I wonder how he would feel if his love one were murdered and such insensitive, stupid comments were made followed their death. I’m sure he wouldn’t like it.

  45. Michelle,
I wanted to jump thru the TV set over Wilborn’s comments…….and he dared to compare this situation to that of Len Bias. I know he was trying to make the comparisons of the emotions felt at the time, but still…..it just wasn’t right to bring up Bias, even for comparison sakes. It just screamed “sensationalism”.

  46. Ma’at—Isfet—Ma’at: order—chaos—order.

That’s the way of the world. I know it – but it hurts all the same. Can “we” be made whole again? I don’t know. They say time heals all wounds – I guess that depends on how close you are.

Condolences to those in the circle who may come across these words…pray for peace — and work for justice.

  47. Mizzo-

You might want to share this trick with a friend of yours – using the Opera Browser (or any browser, but it’s easier with Opera)…

You can review ALL stories from the Associated Press run through ESPN. Since I have a few thousand of these backed up in my browser, I began to notice a trend. The AP has made a steadfast commitment to report any and all infractions (perceived or real or anticipated) with respect to player conduct.

The AP has an axe to grind. It’s a political organization with an agenda. The AP has not focused on balanced coverage of the leagues – but has instead focused on the behavior of certain players – and if you go back through the list – you won’t find dense coverage of athletes like Brady or Leinhart or others – but you will find the types of things that would raise red flags for NABJ.

I suggest that some of these journalists use a few new media tools to track old media fools. It took me two seconds to configure the browser.

  48. I have no religious affiliations or world view, yet I seek truth in all things and have always liked this passage from my youth.

    1 Corinthians 13

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears.

When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.

Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

In order for us to ascend to the bosom of the creator, we should reflect and mirror that which is pure and true. Sean is not in anyway more special than those has gone before, yet his transition should be special in that we must let today be the turning point to self-evaluation, growth and over standing, for we are all links in a chain greater than we know.

  51. Sankofa,

Nice post. Your understanding of life is unique. I appreciate your words.

  52. Sankofa-

That was nice. I’m no writer and not one for superlatives, but that was cool.

And no, the TSF comments are not the only ones upset with the media handling of this, I read a couple different comment sections dealing with Sean Taylors death. All the ones I read people had an overwhelming disatisfaction with the Wilbon comments. And the Redskins page was very upset with the way a couple of writers handled this.

  53. Thanks Michelle and Temple,

I do have constant conflict with anger, violence and the pursuit of the higher self, but constant self evaluation and the example of the TSF family has been nudging me towards letting go of rage. I appreciate the original TSF posters for giving me a forum to express myself….warts and all!

I just want to remind all of us that every day we live is an investment for the future, those with close families will understand how much more precious it is.

I have always put stock in the quality of friends, not the quantity, because friends are the flowers in the garden of life…though we don’t know all personally, let our friendship through a higher calling be the bond to spiritual and physical freedom.

    Peace and blessing

  54. GMP

Yours and other righteous European participation gives lie to the prevailing propaganda that TSF is for Africans only and that “it’s a race card” thing. As I said before we are all links in a greater chain, with the ultimate end being us leaving a better planet and society for our children.

    It’s all good!
