I think that Title IX is a great thing. It is a fact that it has given women over 400 percent more opportunities in collegiate sports. The one thing that I have a problem with is the fact that we are seeing Male athletic sports get cut across the board. What make me even more angry, is how women activists blame it on the football programs. If they opened their damn eyes then they would realize that most football programs fund women programs who don't even have any revenue from their programs. I think that Title IX needs to be tweaked a little so that it does not start to discriminate against men. That is my two cents and you can take it any way you would like.

I think it really speaks that sports is entertainment for most folk. I enjoy women's sports. The drama of the college World Series and the women's Final Four just does it for me. I could care less if it's women or men. If the performance is good, I'm on it.

Plus, just like I do with my sons, I watch women's sports with my daughter to show her the nuances that she can apply to her game.

LP

I agree - one of the easiest targets in sports media is the WNBA.

Mizzo and DW

I've got a 9-year old daughter. as the unfortunate inheritor of my genes, she is unlikely ever to play varsity collegiate sports. But, it amazes me how little recognition there is of the fact that organized sports are as a great a place to push oneself and learn and grow for females as is true for males. It's only because collegiate athletics have become so professionalized that the "bottom line" for too many people is - well, if they aren't professional grade athletes, then money is just being wasted on them. Never mind that the vast majority of male collegiate athletes are also going to be doing something other than sports for a living, as the NCAA commercials always tell us.

The idea of athletics for athletics sake is really lost in the way college sports is covered, and one consequence of this is the denigration of female athletic participation.

Ken, the sense of irony is duly noted LOL! But it's a cultural thang, dudes can pimp slap other dudes!

Anyway, great story, Mr Weiler. On a related point (I think), there's a whole lotta fussing, hand-wringing, garment-rending, and knashing of teeth over women's professional sports, which is a sort of natural by-product of Title IX. I mean, Bill Simmons (a man with a daughter, so he says) versus the WNBA has been tragically unfunny for a while now. But that dude shapes peoples' opinions.

DaveyWayne,

Although I find it incredibly ironic that someone would use the term "pimp slap" to show their support of women's rights, I agree with your other points.

Great post. So many people blame female athletes over the Title IX issue and don't place the blame on the amount of money that is spent on football and/or basketball.

I attended East Tennessee State University a I-AA school that cut football in 2003. The football program was ultimately cut because it cost too much money. How do you draw a crowd when the University of Tennessee is an hour down the road.

ETSU never had any compliance issues with Title IX. Just a losing product that was costing the university a fortune. They did ultimately pour some of those funds into women's athletics but a lot also went into the men's basketball program which many failed to notice.

I just find it fascinating when men get all up in arms about women in sports. It's truly like watching the world go back in time 100 years.

Truth is, women's sports, much more often than their male sport counterparts, come in under budget. However, when push comes to shove at "Big Time U." what sports are the first to be extinguished?
Women's sports..... There's a great book, College Sports Inc., that describes this problem - and it was published in 1990.

Mizz,

My wife, who is the daughter of a PROUD Panamanian man who had a sip of Coffee in the Yankee system was unfortunate enough, after playing softball and baseball all her life, to transfer to a school in Texas which didnt start women's softball as a sport until the year AFTER she graduated, only to go to a College which didnt start women's softball until the year AFTER she graduated.

I have two sons, but I have seen what Women's sports can do for girls first hand, in terms of money available for college for female athletes which leads to more college graduates, etc. etc.

Youll have to forgive my violent tendencies when it comes to protecting our girls.

J way to come with some serious insight.

I can distinctly remember the uproar regarding Title IX. I'm glad "most" have come around to understand its significance.

Could you imagine having world class talent and no team to play for? That had to be so frustrating for so many women.

DW...chill bruh! ;) I hear you all day though. I couldn't imagine my beautiful daughter going through what some women had to go through.

Any man with daughters who has the audacity to badmouth title IX should be soundly pimp slapped.

If you are a man with a daughter(s) and you come into this post to bitch and whine about title IX you really need to re-read this post a few times and let it sink in.

I'm just saying.
